POCC

People of Color in Crisis, Inc. (POCC) was founded in 1988 by a group of African-American and Caribbean gay men. As many of these men watched their friends, lovers, and family struck down by AIDS; they were determined to do something about it. The agency's original mission was to provide the community with education, support and resources on HIV. Over the years POCC has offered a wide variety of programming in response to the ever changing nature of the HIV/AIDS epidemic and the issues important to Black gay men. In the last couple of years, the agency's mission has expanded to include all aspects of Black gay men's lives.

Today they offer a wide array of services. The programs range from providing support for members of the community who are infected or affected by the HIV virus, to providing a safe space for community members to drop in. They are working towards telling our stories through research, advocacy, and public policy. As they continue to evolve and discover new ways to live our lives, POCC will continue their dedication to programming that not only advocates for us, but propels us toward enjoying richer and fuller existences.

Black Gay Research Group

A collective of Black gay researchers committed to making sure the stories of our lives are told.

Conversations (Monthly)
Drop into a hot spot where brothers who are into other brothers can chill, drop knowledge, or just have…Conversations.

Brotha's Rap (Weekly)
A social support group of Black Gay Men of all ages living with HIV. Join us to discuss sexuality, dating, sex, and healthy living.

Computer Lab
A bank of computers for checking e-mail, surfing the web and light word processing.

Confidential HIV Testing
A free HIV test. Know your HIV status!

Couples Only (Monthly)
“Sanctuary: A Gathering of Black Male Couples.” This group discusses everything from fights to finances, from romance to reassessing your priorities, and meets monthly so that men who love each other can find the tools necessary to maintain and elevate, in love!

Drop-in Center/Safe Space
A secure space to hang out, watch TV, and interact with people like you and our friendly staff.

Individual Level Interventions
One-on-one support to assist clients in navigating the maze of New York City's emergency social services system.

Many Men, Many Voices (3MV)
A seminar series; done in a retreat format, that looks at our lives as black gay men, the choices we make and how they play into your risk for HIV.

Outreach Services
We come to where you are so you can learn about POCC and our services.

Pride in the City
A midsummer celebration of the lives of black gay, bisexual, lesbian and transgendered people from around the country.

Things of That Nature- Young Adult Group (Weekly)
A weekly forum for gay, lesbian, bi-sexual and questioning youth of color and their friends, to discuss the issues and concerns that affect our community. Join us and let's be real about it! Ages 16-24.

Young Men of Color Coalition
A consortium of New York City agencies serving gay young men of color looking at the issues that face our youth and find ways to work collectively to better address them.
