Shortbus

Item #: V160

SYNOPSIS
Written and directed by John Cameron Mitchell (who previously starred in and directed the film adaptation of his international stage hit, Hedwig and the Angry Inch), Shortbus explores the lives of several characters living in present-day New York as they navigate the comic and tragic intersections between love and sex. Male and female, straight and gay, the characters find one and other - and eventually find themselves - when they all converge at a weekly underground salon called "Shortbus," a mad nexus of art, music, politics, and polysexual carnality.
Mitchell developed the film's story along with his ensemble cast, all of whom are making their feature film debuts, and who were selected after submitting videotaped interviews/auditions in response to a well-publicized open casting call posted on a website. Over a half million people visited the website and nearly 500 people sent in tapes before the final seven leading performers/characters were selected to workshop the storyline with Mitchell.

The resulting film, one of the true sensations of the 2006 Cannes Film Festival, presents sex and sexuality as never before seen in mainstream entertainment, and promises to be one of the most talked-about films for months - and years - to come.

A Filmaker's view of Sortbus
Toby Ross wrote on 07/17/2007:
It takes guts, vision and lots of work to make a brilliant film such as this one. I went with my friend to the opening months ago and I found it interesting that I laughed at jokes the audience seemed uninspired by. I guess I have a different kind of humor. This is a modern film by a man who is not afraid to experiment, I love the idea that sex is not gay straight or bi, rather one big grey zones where all of us reside in, instead of categorizing us as this lovely little mental ghetto that surfaces in the alleys of boystown and is only visible at gay pride days and Howard Brown clinics. 4 stars from me Toby Ross to John Cameron Mitchell.
Too fabulous for words...

This will be a cult classic for sure. So many rich characters and brilliant one liners. I can here them all now... Fianlly a film so unashameldy candid about sex and sexuality. If there was a 10 this was it..!!
You've got better things to do!

One of the worst movies I've ever seen. I was so bored. Don't waste your money; more importantly, don't waste your time!

Jaded queens aside.....this was one of the bext gay sex films I have ever seeen. Unike the "indies" that give us semi-good acting and "limp" sex. This movie really delivers! Hey anyone can watch porn and downoad truckloads from the internet --but there is no plot development or any real connection to the characters. And I do like some of the indies - but they always stray from anything really graphic. This is the perfect blend. Yes --- not a great film but a very satisfying one! And, of course the first scene was a real winner!
